“Memoria de pez” a documentary on threatened freshwater migratory species

Memoria de pez” is a documentary produced by RTVE (Spanish Television) that highlights the dangerous state of the populations of atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), european eel (Anguilla anguilla) and sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) in the Iberian peninsula.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
European eel (Anguilla anguilla)
Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus)

These are all diadromous species that require migrating between the freshwater and saltwater realms to complete their life cycles. Due to widespread fragmentation by man-made barriers in rivers, these species are being blocked from their spawning or feeding grounds and their populations are facing accelerated declines.

The documentary explores the decline of these species and interviews experts in their conservation like Carlos García de Leániz, Pablo Caballero and César Rodriguez.

Carlos explains why these species are endangered and the difficulties in their conservation.

It also interviews anglers who have experienced their decline first-hand but still want to continue fishing species that are dangerously approaching their extinction.
